Welcome to friendGroup. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our web application. By using friendGroup, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

#2. SMS Text Messaging

Message Types

friendGroup sends SMS notifications from +1 (321) 384-5008 to users who opt-in during account setup or in Settings. We send the following types of messages:

  • Authentication Codes (2FA/OTP) - Required for secure login via phone number
  • Event Invitations - New Movie Nights and group events you're invited to
  • Birthday Reminders - Friend birthdays (1 week and 1 day before)
  • Leaderboard Updates - Monthly updates if you're in the top 3
  • Group Predictions - Fun predictions and superlatives for group trips
  • Meme of the Week - Weekly recap of most-used meme (optional)

Message Frequency

Message frequency varies based on your preferences and activity, typically up to 15 messages per month depending on your notification preferences. You can control which types of messages you receive in your Settings.

Opt-Out Instructions

You can opt-out of SMS notifications at any time by:

When you opt-out, you will receive a confirmation message. You can opt back in at any time by replying START or enabling SMS notifications in Settings.

Consent to receive SMS messages is not a condition of using friendGroup. You can use the app without enabling SMS notifications. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.

Cost Disclosure

Message and data rates may apply. Standard carrier fees from your mobile provider apply to all SMS messages. friendGroup does not charge for SMS messages, but your carrier may charge standard messaging rates.

Data Sharing for SMS Delivery

We use Twilio, a third-party SMS service provider, to deliver SMS messages. Your phone number is shared with Twilio solely for the purpose of delivering messages to you.

No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Text messaging opt-in data and consent will not be shared with any third parties.

#3. Information We Collect

We collect the following types of information:

  • Account Information: Email address, name, phone number (optional), birthday, avatar URL
  • Preferences: SMS notification preferences, favorite movies, theme preferences
  • Usage Data: Messages sent, reactions received, leaderboard rankings, event participation
  • Authentication Data: Login credentials (handled securely via NextAuth.js)

#4. How We Store Your Data

Your data is stored securely using Supabase, a cloud database service. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. We use industry-standard security practices to protect your information.

#5. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Twilio: SMS message delivery (phone numbers shared for this purpose)
  • Google OAuth: Authentication (email address shared for login)
  • TMDb (The Movie Database): Movie data and posters (no personal data shared)
  • Supabase: Database hosting (all user data stored here)
  • Vercel: Application hosting (no personal data stored)

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

#6. Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide services. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal information within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal purposes.

  • Access your personal data
  • Update or correct your personal data
  • Delete your account and personal data
  • Opt-out of SMS notifications at any time
  • Export your data
